Greetings everyone,

And welcome to our newest members, Nancy, Kile and Jesse, who I hope we'll see next Monday evening, 7:00 in the back room at Redline.

Here's just a rough idea of a possible meeting agenda, comments/additions welcome:

  • Introductions: briefly, each person says a bit about themselves and how they got involved in naturalism.
  • Current concerns: what issues, personal or social or political, are on your radar? How might they be addressed from a naturalistic perspective, if at all?
  • Open discussion.
  • Planning an activity: if there's sufficient interest, we could plan something besides meeting at Redline, e.g., a movie at a theater or a video at someone's house, or an outing to the science museum...

And here's some basic stuff that it never hurts to think about, given that it will help give the group direction and purpose:

- What would you like get out of this group? What would you like to see happen? To socialize is fine, to change the world is fine, and anything in between.

- What do you see that's unique, if anything, to naturalism, as opposed to secular humanism, atheism, skepticism, and freethought, that makes it worth memeing (promoting) as naturalism per se? Why should we self-identify as naturalists as opposed to any of these other categories (not that they're mutually exclusive, of course)?

- What are your primary concerns vis a vis naturalism? Some people are interested in promoting science, others in developing a naturalistic ethics. What's your primary focus, if you have one, and how does it relate to naturalism? Don't be afraid to think big, or small.

- What sorts of opportunities can we create to meme naturalism, especially as this relates to your concerns?

OK, enough!

See you Monday,

Tom
