It's the day after the Dawkins event, so we can spend some time cooling down from that. Hope to see you.

Please bring a potluck dinner item, finger foods, drinks, etc, but hey, please come without if you don't have time. We probably won't eat till 6:00, or so, so don't worry about being exactly on time. After dinner, those that wish can settle down and have some discussion.

Discussion topics:

  • Does the study of Intelligent Design have ANYTHING to offer?
No and Yes? We’ve had some Intelligent Design proponents on campus recently and to my mind there has been at least one frank admission in William Dembski’s confession that the designer that he has in mind is a supernatural god, which the ID’ers are usually loathe to admit. However, valid points were also made in that the search for design is currently, naturalistically employed both in archaeology (when studying primitive sites) and in the more speculative SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Project, and in potentially identifying genetically engineered DNA in organisms that may be released into the environment.

Here are some questions that we ought to consider separately:

    • Can ID methodology be scientifically formulated?
    • Despite the protests of its supporters, isn’t popular ID really supernaturally motivated?
    • Based on its results, does ID pose a legitimate scientific challenge to modern evolutionary theory, and thus deserve a place in the biology classroom?

We all have ideas about the answers to these questions. Please come and share your opinions.

  • Future activities brainstorming

    •  Lots of good food. We had a great discusion about design detection in naturalistic science and the distinction between that and supernaturalistic Intelligent Design. The conversation really got going and the party was still going when I left at midnight. First time that the party's closed me down! ;)
    •  It was great meeting everybody. And talking openly about everything. I am humbled.
